Came across this smart advertisement from Toyota for its soon-to-be-replaced Corolla. You can now buy 80% of Corolla (9 lacs loan – 11 lacs car cost) with a downpayment of 1.5 lakhs and an EMI of around 18000. At the end of 4 years you should pay the 20% cost (approx 2 lacs). The only question you should ask yourself is will a 4yr old corolla fetch me more than 2lacs at 2011??

I was following carsalesindia.com after their fabulous launch (they had their launch covered in suntv..so unusual for such a small car sale site). I was impressed and had even set few alerts too (for palio) . Today i noticed that they have included an interesting payment option. 10 rupees per car detail. Good idea folks. Good luck.

I accompanied my dad to his bank today. It turned out to be a real sick incident for me. We went to Indian Bank Madipakkam chennai at 10AM and enquired about pensioner loan. (Dad is a retired Asst Director he gets his pension from this lousy bank). We were told that my mum should be present to sign the form. I asked the person how long it will take to fill up the form. He said around 30 mins. My mum recently underwent a brain tumor surgery and i was worried to having her wait for long in the bank. My mum came to the bank and they were made to wait for 3 hours and more. I finally went ahead and asked them how long it will take and the guy said wait if you want or you go home dont disturb me because i am doing two persons job today and an ATM is out of order and i have to submit all these cheques now.
I was shocked. The guy was unknowingly washing his dirty linen in public and i was totally taken back. How could a bank employee talk like this? Are these pensioners at their mercy? Dont they deserve their rightful attention? Will CMD of indian bank be pleased if she her flight attendend says madam please wait for 4 hours inside the plane because our pilot overworked and he is busy fixing an engine. Damn stupid and damn arrogant behaviour.
Government should be fair and give pensioners a choice to have their accounts in private banks like HDFC or ICICI. Then Indian bank will know the value of pensioners.
Update: I checked their website. Their code of conduct say “to deal quickly and symphathetically” with customers. Oh how sweet. 3 hours was real quick and the way they handled the situatio was extemely symphathetic. You irresponsible morons.

There are 100 ways to announce a change. UTI chose the worst of all.
After all why do companies change name? Something fundamental should have changed which the company wants to communicate. Its a promise that the company tries to sell to its customers, shareholders, and general public. The promise could be as simple as better service or as high expanding global operations. The campaign should highlight THIS promise.
But the UTI campaign says something that is higly rememberable…but useless. Everything else is the same except the name !!! So what? [The only saving grace is cute TV ad featuring the twin girl children. ]

Stumbled upon this southwest airlines blog. For those who don’t know southwest, they are the father of the low-cost airline industry. Founded in 1971 they pioneered the art of keeping the costs low and transfering the cost advantage to the flyer. They bought the same model airplanes so that cost of maintenance is low, they prebought oil to fight any volatility on oil price (which saved a lot), offered Americans peanuts onboard, and managed a 20minute turnaround on airports. They just continued this year after year and thanks to this astute business acumen…they have been the ONLY airline in USA making profit for 34th consecutive years. Long live low-cost!
SouthWest Revenue for 2006 stood at 9.1billion dollars – more than the combined revenue of infy, tcs, wipro (am assuming 3b each)

I flew airdeccan for the first time, madurai to chennai, and i think its very good. I mean the airbus (A320?)- its new and its big. KPN travels charges around 500-600 rupees for the same route on land……on airdeccan i travel 10 times faster by paying just 3 times the kpn cost. Am loving it.

Are they buying JUNK or has the Indian automobile industry arrived on the Global marketplace? Whatever it may be its pure fun watching indian cos playing in the global pool. Good luck Tata. [I think the CNNmoney report could be a leak or just a rumour. No other official news has been released by either Tata or Ford.]

Was browing through Top Gear programs in you tube and landed on this video. This is about a small car called Atom from a small company called Ariel. Clarkson says that there are only 7 employees at this company. I can’t believe it. With 7 employees they have achieved something that we could only dream off. They have packed a 2litre Honda ivtec 4 cylinder engine into a race car type chasis and built a car. Their website says, if it not required its not there. So the car doesnt have any doors, sheetmetal, stereo etc. All it has is 4 wheels and a steering wheel. Don’t forget to checkout the video. Towards the end Clarkson posts the speed of this car just one step below the top ferrari. So at second place we have Atom which costs 20,000 pounds and just a step ahead is half a million pounds !! Height of achievement for such a small company.

I see a new trend in email marketing in India. Car cos are pumping their ad budget into two companies 1)moneycontrol and 2)CIOL for their email campaigns. This is a recent ad i got from moneycontrol for GM Chevrolet Optra (actually its a daewoo car – Nubira or something….its not a chevrolet!!)

Ixigo posted a response to my blog here. It sounded to be a very honest post so i went out to check their claim. I checked the fare for chennai-bangalore roundtrip for four adults in both ixigo.com as well as cleartrip.com. Ixigo has stood up to what they said. They are cheaper, although by a measely 58 rupees. But the real winner i guess is cleartrip….you know why? because cleartrip.com is easy to pronounce and remember. Imagine how it will be if i spell i-x-i-g-o-dot-com over phone to someone? They will never ever get to that site.
Folks, naming is not a joke. We have done thousands of online tech support sessions over the web and it is so so hard when we start spelling out a-d-v-e-n-t-n-e-t dot com over phone. It goes like A for adam, d for dog blah blah blah. Now think ixigo…i for indico x for ???? Ufff forget it.
multiply 3248 by 4 to get the total cost (Rs.12,992.)

The most vibrant two-wheeler makers in india, Bajaj Automobiles, have said that they plan to launch cars. The interesting part is that these cars are believe to be in sub 2 lac range. Pulsar 220 retails for 80-85k. Launching a car would be the most logical way to break into the 2 lac segment – untouched so far by both bike and car cos! Good luck bajaj.

If you are working in a software company and if you are NOT developing something for mobile….you are missing a gold mine. Mobile is the next computer. What computers did to bank passbooks and long queues, is what mobiles are going to do to computers. I like this transition. Checkout one such interesting mobile service recently launched in India.
